Surgical intervention may be an ideal way to correct facial paralysis that limits eyelid function, according to the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery.
Often, these individuals are unable to completely close their eyes and suffer from dry, irritated eyes. Using pre- and post-operative assessments on nearly 40 of these individuals, researchers at the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary found that patients had significantly improved quality of life after surgical intervention. To correct the issue, surgery may have included a weight placed within the upper eyelid or suspension of the lower lid.
Another popular procedure that showed a marked improvement in the patients’ quality of life was eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty, which corrects a descending brow. This surgery removes excess skin around the eye and improves the area cosmetically, as well.
Eyelid surgery, as well as the other surgical interventions not only improved the patients’ quality of life, but also had a positive effect on their long-term vision and health. Without proper protection for the cornea, it can become inflamed and may lead to vision loss, according to the researchers.
