Indiana Plastic Surgery, Dr. David Robinson, Body Contouring Procedures

Body Contouring Procedures

Liposuction

You may be a candidate for liposuction if you have excess subcutaneous fat, which is resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction may also be desirable if you wish to change the contours of your body. Commonly involved areas are the anterior part of the neck (under the chin), upper arms and armpits, male chest/breasts, trunk, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, calves, and ankles. Most patients are near normal weight and desire permanent contour changes.

Abdominoplasty

You may be a candidate for a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) if you have loose or sagging abdominal wall skin that is frequently associated with abnormal relaxation of the anterior abdominal wall muscles (often secondary to multiple pregnancies or prior surgery). You may also desire a tummy tuck if you are unable to tighten your abdominal wall skin with exercise. An abdominoplasty is intended to give the patient a smoother, flatter abdomen.

Abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia either within the hospital or in an outpatient setting. (Mini-abdominoplasties can be performed under sedation and local anesthesia.) Mini-abdominoplasty tightens the lower abdominal wall skin only (shortest scar). Standard abdominoplasty tightens all of the abdominal wall skin (standard scar). Extended abdominoplasty tightens the abdomen and the flanks or sides (longest scar extending around the flanks onto lower back.) Light activity is comfortable in 10-20 days. Sports will not be comfortable for about 6 weeks. Additional procedures that may enhance the result of a tummy tuck are Liposuction, Breast Procedures, or a Thigh Lift.

Abdominoplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. Usually, the patient is responsible for payment. The specific risks and the suitability of abdominoplasty for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual. View abdominoplasty photos.

Indiana Plastic Surgery, Dr. David Robinson, Breast Surgery Procedures

Breast Surgery Procedures

Breast Augmentation

Women who desire larger breasts may wish to have a breast enlargement (augmentation) procedure. Breast augmentation may also be indicated for women who have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other. Breast augmentation is intended to give the patient larger and more shapely breasts. A more positive self image may also be a result of breast enlargement. Breast enlargement is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. A small incision is made under the breast and a saline breast implant is inserted under the breast tissue or under the breast tissue and the underlying muscle. The patient goes home in an elastic bra. The bra helps hold the breasts in the correct position. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Sutures are placed under the skin and do not need to be removed. Light activities can be resumed as tolerated and aerobic activities can be started in about 3 weeks. Moving or sliding the implants within the breast pockets during the postoperative period may reduce the frequency of wrinkling. An additional procedure that would enhance the result of a breast augmentation is a Mastopexy (breast lift) - if the breasts are sagging in addition to being small. View breast augmentation photos.

Breast Lift

You may be a candidate for breast lift surgery if you have sagging breasts due to past pregnancies, genetics, or aging. You may also desire a mastopexy if breast sagging is too great to be treated with an implant alone. The procedure may also be helpful if your nipple-areolar complexes (pigmented areas around nipples) are enlarged. Breast lift (mastopexy) is intended to give the patient an elevated, more youthful breast contour, as well as nipple-areolar complexes of the desired size and at the correct height. Breast lift is usually done on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. The design of the incisions can vary but usually include incisions around the nipple-areolar complex and in the crease under the breast. The nipple-areolar complex is repositioned higher, the excess skin is removed, and the breast is reshaped in a pleasing contour and in a more normal position. The insertion of an implant as well, may or may not be advisable. The patient goes home with only light dressings over the incision lines. Sutures are placed under the skin and do not need to be removed. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Light activities may be started in 7-10 days. Additional procedures which may enhance the result are a small Breast Reduction or Breast Enlargement. View breast lift photos.

Breast Reduction

Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight-from back and neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Bra straps may leave indentations in their shoulders. Unusually large breasts can make a woman-or a teenage girl-feel extremely self-conscious. Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammaplasty, is designed for such women. The procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to give the woman smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body. If you're considering breast reduction, this will give you a basic understanding of the procedure- when it can help, how it's performed, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please be sure to ask your doctor if there is anything about the procedure you don't understand.
Indiana Plastic Surgery, Dr. David Robinson, Facial Plastic Surgery

Facial Surgery Procedures

Face Lift

You may be a candidate for a facelift if you have experienced a loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone of the face and neck. A facelift may also be desirable if you have the appearance of jowls and deep creases between the base of the nose and the corners of the mouth, and developed facial and neck wrinkles. A facelift may also be helpful if you believe you lack youthful chin and neck contours and/or feel you have a tired facial appearance. A facelift is intended to give the patient a more rested and youthful contour to the face and neck. Facelifts range in size from "mini" to "standard" depending on location and extent of skin laxity. The operation is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia.

Rhinoplasty

You may be a candidate for nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) if you have a nose that is cosmetically unattractive or does not "fit" with other facial features. Rhinoplasty may also be indicated for an abnormal appearance of the nose as a result of birth defects, injury, or disease. Nose reshaping is intended to produce a more attractive nasal shape and/or a nose in better proportion to other facial features. Rhinoplasty is done on an outpatient basis under sedation, and local or general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will decide which of the following techniques should be used: STANDARD RHINOPLASTY: Incisions are made inside the nostrils. The nasal bones, cartilage, and soft tissues are reshaped to improve the external contour. OPEN RHINOPLASTY: Frequently used for difficult or larger noses. Involves one external incision across the columella (strut between the nostrils). Bones, cartilage, and soft tissues are reshaped under direct vision. TIP-PLASTY: If only the nasal tip is abnormal, it may be corrected with either a standard or external (open) approach. Large nostrils may be reduced through tiny incisions at the outer base of the nostrils with either type of rhinoplasty.

Eyelid Surgery - Blepharoplasty

You may be a candidate for eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) if you have excessive, sagging, or wrinkled upper or lower eyelid skin. Eyelid lift can also be helpful if you have excess upper eyelid skin that interferes with vision or if you have lost your natural upper eyelid crease. Eyelid lift may also be indicated if you have puffy pouches of fat in the upper or lower lids that create a tired or aged appearance. The eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) procedure is intended to produce a more youthful and rested appearance of the eyes. The procedure may also widen your visual fields if excessive upper lid skin has partially blocked vision. Blepharoplasty is done on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. The incisions are made where the natural crease should be in the upper lids and below the lash line in the lower lids. Excess fat and skin are removed. If only excess fat is present in the lower lids, it may be removed through an incision inside the lower lids with no external incision or scar (transconjunctival blepharoplasty).
Indiana Plastic Surgery, Dr. David Robinson, Consultation

What to Expect at your First Consultation

Cosmetic surgery gives you the ability to do more than simply change your appearance. It can transform the way you feel about yourself, providing a more positive and self-assured attitude and greater self esteem. It is important to find a surgeon in whom you have the utmost confidence and with whom you have an excellent rapport. This rapport begins the moment you contact the office. Our staff strives to make all of your encounters pleasant and comfortable, even for the most shy or discerning individuals. Our patients must think we succeed because many come back year after year and refer their friends and family to us as well.

From Consultation to Surgery

Your consultation is an opportunity to meet Dr. Robinson and discuss your individual needs. He will perform a medical history and then spend time listening carefully to you describe your surgical goals. Dr. Robinson understands that there are some anxieties about elective surgery and makes it a point to get to know you in a comfortable setting before examining you. He will take the time to understand what your objectives are and then outline an approach to achieve your goals. It is important to have a realistic understanding of what can be achieved. He will help you create a foundation by discussing diet, exercise, skin health, and other basics before proceeding with the building blocks of surgery. You will have the opportunity to view photographs of others who have undergone surgery, and you will see what results can be achieved.

Why your experience here will be different

While qualifications, credentials, and certificates are very important, they can be hard to relate to. It is your relationship with the surgeon that counts. Dr. Robinson takes sincere interest in his patients, and it shows in his ability to understand your concerns. He uses his experience to advise you and help you arrive at a decision that is best for you. No question is too small or unimportant. You are welcome to return as many times before and after surgery as needed so he, or his nurse, can address your every concern. You will find that he explains things clearly and patiently. You will also find his staff very attentive, providing the personalized care and privacy patients require and deserve
