Microdermabrasion Procedures

Microdermabrasion is a skin resurfacing treatment that rejuvenates and restores a natural glow to your skin. The procedure is simple and painless.

As a clinical exfoliation technique, microdermabrasion is a gentler approach than laser skin resurfacing, dermabrasion or a deep chemical peel. People choose microdermabrasion at Indiana Plastic Surgery because it:

  • Provides fresher, healthier-looking skin
  • Is suitable for all skin types and colors
  • Requires no anesthetic or downtime

Who Should Undergo Microdermabrasion?

If your skin shows signs of mild sun damage or photo-aging, or has an otherwise dull appearance, you may benefit from microdermabrasion. Other indications include rough skin texture, fine wrinkles, enlarged pores and thick skin.

How Does it Work?

The microdermabrasion procedure is simple and painless and takes place in an office setting. During treatment, the outermost skin layer is buffed with tiny micro-crystals, removing impurities and dead cells. After treatment, the skin will produce new skin cells, replacing the old and creating a healthy, more vibrant appearance.

The handpiece is passed over your skin’s surface. This multifunctional tool selects the skin area to be treated, propels micro-crystals onto the surface of the skin, and vacuums the dead cells in a gentle polishing process. Each microdermabrasion treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour.

Microdermabrasion may be combined with other treatments like a chemical peel to enhance the results. A specific skin care program may also be recommended to maximize patient results.

After Your Microdermabrasion

One of the greatest benefits of microdermabrasion is that you can return to your daily return directly after treatment. Keep in mind that your skin may be sensitive to sun exposure, so take preventative steps to protect it with SPF. Though side effects are rare, you should be prepared for possible mild post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or minor bruising from the suction of the handpiece.

Because microdermabrasion is a gentle skin resurfacing approach, and each person’s skin is different, one session may not be sufficient to achieve the results you desire. Multiple treatments may be needed to produce the best results. The specified number of recommended treatments can vary, and will often be spaced two to three weeks apart.
