Neck Lift

A neck lift can address excess neck fat, loose or excess skin, and poor neck definition. Neck lift surgery is actually considered a type of facelift because the techniques used and indications for surgery are similar in nature.

If you appear to have a so-called ‘turkey neck’ or possess a poorly defined jaw/neck line, the neck lift may be ideal for you.

When to Consider a Neck Lift

You may benefit from a neck lift if you are bothered by:
  • Loose neck skin
  • Excess fat in the neck
  • Neck bands
  • Sagging neck muscle/tissue.
These common conditions occur because of weight gain, aging, or genetic predisposition. If you're considering neck lift surgery, you should have realistic expectations, refrain from smoking and be in generally good health.

What Happens During Surgery?

Your neck lift surgery will be conducted using either local with sedation or general anesthesia, and should last between two and three hours. Neck lift surgery may require two incisions under or behind the ear which allow Dr. Robinson to remove or reposition excess skin. Other cases may require another small incision under the chin, so a part of the sagging neck muscle can be removed or tightened.

Excess fat is often removed using liposuction or a scalpel. Once the underlying muscles and tissues are tightened, the overlying skin is re-draped, any excess skin is removed, and sutures are placed to close the incisions. A neck lift can be conducted alone, or in conjunction with a face lift.

After Your Neck Lift

While recovery time will vary from patient to patient, the neck lift recovery period often lasts about two to three weeks. Dr. Robinson will provide specific aftercare instructions. He may advise you to keep your head elevated as you rest after surgery. A compression garment around the neck or chin may need to be worn for about three weeks to promote healing and skin contraction.

During recovery you should refrain from tobacco and alcohol use for three weeks, and exercise for two weeks. Any drains that were used during surgery are removed after the first couple days after surgery. Be sure to consult with your surgeon before the day of your procedure so that you know exactly what to do as you begin the recovery phase.
