How Many Years? The Doctors on Reversing the Signs of Aging

Before you read any further, take a moment to watch the video above. See if you can guess the age of Nancy, the woman featured in a recent episode of ABC’s The Doctors. Take the “Nancy Challenge.”

It’s incredible to think that most people on the street conclude that Nancy is in her 30s, with one going as low as 26 and another going as high as 45. Nikki Boyer, the actress and singer-songwriter, takes great delight in taking to the streets with her enigmatic acquaintance.

“Only in Hollywood would you put a woman in a cage and say, ‘how old do you think she is?’” Boyer cracks.

In fact, Nancy is a grandmother of five, and is 48 years old.

While it’s never made clear in the video that Nancy has had any work done, it’s a clever way of showing how a woman can appear much younger than her years. Studies show that plastic surgery, on average, makes people look nine years younger.

“People always want to know, ‘how much younger am I going to look?’” says Dr. Drew Ordon, a plastic surgeon and one of the show’s hosts.

“It sort of depends on where you’re starting off but in general terms if you’re talking about a facelift you expect to look about 10 years younger…. It is surgery; do your homework before jumping into anything. Strive for natural results, make sure you see the kind of work that your board-certified plastic surgeon is doing, and expect age-appropriate changes.

“If you’re 60, don’t try to look 20, because that’s not going to happen. You can’t go there naturally…. Do it for the right reason; the right reason is doing it for yourself.”

Dr. Ordon reflects on some of the latest developments in the industry, as less invasive procedures are becoming more popular. “Less is better for men, for women – I think that’s one of the biggest changes in plastic surgery. We know that removing less, more natural, is better.”

Minimally invasive alternatives to facelift surgery, such as microdermabrasion, or injectable treatments such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Botox, can offer natural results without the need for scarring or a long recovery period. Laser therapies such as Lumenis, IPL photorejuvenation, and laser vein therapy can also provide targeted facial rejuvenation.
