Many people struggle with excess body fat and feel they could benefit from some type of body contouring procedure. When a healthy diet and exercise fail to get rid of fat bulges, liposuction may be a good option to achieve your goals. It’s one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States and can target many areas such as the abdomen, waist, thighs, hips, upper arms, back, and more.  Its popularity is mainly due to the fact that the surgery offers benefits such as a more defined body, improved body proportions, a more balanced body contour, and a self-confidence boost.

Liposuction is a fat reduction procedure, not a weight loss treatment. The best candidates are generally within 30% of a healthy weight range and have localized fat pockets they’re looking to reduce. Good candidates also are non-smokers (if you are a smoker, it’s best to stop smoking as soon as you schedule your procedure). Your surgeon will also evaluate the condition of your skin when discussing liposuction. Patients with good skin elasticity are good candidates, while those with loose skin or cellulite may not be.

The procedure itself involves making small incisions in the skin and inserting a tool called a cannula into the fat pocket. The cannula is attached to a suction device to extract the fat. Since the instrument is small, the scars are small as well. Depending on how much fat is removed, you can expect to see the final results within 1 – 3 months after your procedure.

After the procedure, most patients can return to work in a few days and resume all normal activities (like exercise) within 2-4 weeks. Recovery varies from person to person depending on the area treated, the amount of fat removed, and other factors. Following your surgeon’s post-op instructions is the best way to have as short of a recovery as possible. You may feel some discomfort but rest, hydration, and not smoking will help hasten the healing time and lessen the risk of complications. The most common post-surgical effects can include swelling, bruising, and tenderness.

The fat cells are permanently removed during liposuction, but it is important to note that patients can still gain new fat cells, so following a healthy diet, lifestyle, and exercise plan after treatment can help prevent new fat gain.
